Patrons set legacies into stone 03-23-07
March 23rd, 2007Over the years, Wilson alumni have gone into the world to become doctors, actors, lawyers and even an occasional superstar. With the exception of all but a few, after four years of well-deserved honors in academics, athletics and extracurricular activities, unfortunately, most alumni fall into obscurity. Their only standing memory is a mug shot and a couple of faded pictures in an old yearbook.
The Walk of Fame Campaign, Wilson’s latest construction project, will hopefully preserve the memory of future alumni from being forgotten. Backed by the fundraising company, Bricks ‘R Us, the Walk of Fame Campaign is a project in which students, alumni and community sponsors purchase and decorate bricks that will make up the new quad pavement around the Tony Besse Memorial.
Collected funds will go toward a new paved entryway in the front of the school as well as various murals to be painted on campus.
Through this construction campaign, students and alumni who have built or maintained Wilson’s legacy of excellence will have the opportunity to be immortalized on campus.
This unique fundraising idea is already accumulating buzz among students and community members. Many are excited about donating their money to a worthy cause and personalizing their own bricks. Names of students who have played a role in establishing the school will be immortalized through the ages. And as orders begin to be placed, the cash that will go toward furthering campus beautification will begin to pile up.
The project will allow students to feel involved in improving the campus. While the school will benefit from the aesthetic improvement, with each brick we lay into place, we can acknowledge the past and build a pathway toward the future. In purchasing a brick, we will have the opportunity to leave a part of ourselves at Wilson High School forever.
